I was teaching pre-school through first grade this morning. Last time I tried that, the boys just scattered to play…I told MrGrunty, if you want me to be your teacher, you will have to pay attention and be a good example.

Well, after Pastor’s Children’s Bible minute, we went to class. Well, MrG refused because he wanted his crossword puzzle. I left him, and led the rest of the class.

I gathered them up…that didn’t work. Had them get a pillow to sit on. That sorta got them all involved, and in position to listen. I asked what “temptation” is…. they didn’t know. I pulled out the candy. I tried to follow the script for the lesson plan, “Temptation is when you want to do something that is wrong.”

Had them go chose a stone… went to gather MrG, and he joined us. Had class tell MrG what we are doing. ( “Candy!”…no, in a bit, right now we are chosing a stone. Then fight over getting a pillow for MrG. ) I asked who wants to eat candy…who wants to eat a rock?

We said the prayer, and when I said their name they put stone back in container
(MrG smiles when I say his name in a prayer. Even though he tells me he doesn’t like to pray. He also smiled when I said “teammates” when the congregation was praying for what we are thankful for.)

We read Spark Story Bible of Jesus Temptation after forty days of fasting. That went pretty good. I would stop and ask questions every so often. I got them all to repeat several times, loud and soft, “Only worship God.” ….MsS, do you want to worship a Husky? “No. Only Worship God.”

(Note to self…do not jumble the order of who gets called. Stick with the order, but let every kid be chance to be first. So everyone gets to be first, and last. It’s fair. MsSqueaky got upset because she was last twice!)

We did the retelling of the story,… we used a dinosaur for the devil. On student pointed out that bullies aren’t nice. So we started saying the devil is the biggest meanest bully. They took turns, two kids per each different temptation, I whispered their lines to them, one kid was scary-voice bully, the other would be Jesus response. (MrCuddles liked doing scary voice! but could not repeat his lines with the scary voice.)

Quick prayer, “thank you God for the students, and thank you for the candy that they will nicely eat.” They smiled when they heard that!

We took turns on “Bad Choice, Good Choice”…what would you do if, “you found a wallet…everyone was mean to a kid,…”

We took out stones (more arguing on which one they got).
We did call and response prayer.

Ended class…more candy.

Quote of the day, they were arguing aboot me, “He’s not a kid. He’s a dolt!”

Later, it was nice, we went to a park, they road bikes, then I did one on one time with each of them, ( MsS and MrG soccer, MrC baseball ), then kids vs parents soccer.

Our pastor is leading a series on prayer methods and styles.

Recently, she mentioned a writer who says there are only three types of prayer

  • Help
  • Thanks
  • Wow

been mulling that over, and would add “I’m sorry I messed up again” but I suspect that could be under “help”.

A recent session was on short prayers. Sort of a mantra, repeated many times each day, “Jesus Christ, Son of God, save me.” Which has Gospel precedent, many lepers, blind, sick and hurting people called that out to Jesus. I have been trying to incorporate that into my life. Short prayers, often.

Before the sermon Leena gave a kids sermon that said it’s OK to do a fast prayer. (It was very eloquent, and perfect for kids and for me.)

A good friend mentioned that kids are naturals at prayer. Sometimes…no…often I worry I am not being a good example in prayer, or teaching my children how to pray. Things get rushed, you get busy,…I guess that is the good thing about a seven word prayer.

The other night, MrCuddles was handing me books, and giving each a phrase from The Lord’s Prayer as the title, “thy kingdom come…. Thine Is The Power”

MsSqueaky has basic dinner prayer of “thank you God for God And Jesus, and for our family and for all the people”

MrGrunty, recently was sick, we said prayers for him, and even offered his name for prayers at church worship, (MsS smiled when I did that, when we told him later, MrG gave a grin). When I thought he was mostly better I didn’t mention him sick in our bedtime prayer. He chastised me for that.
